About Chad
Chad M. Bowlin is a sixth generation Californian, and twenty years ago he and his wife moved from Laguna Beach, Ca. to Bristol, Rhode Island. He attended submarine school, class of #79, in 1952 in New London, Conn: "UDT" {i.e. Underwater Demolition Team - whose name changed to 'SEALS" in 1963}. He was raised by his great-grandmother in the high deserts of historical Northern San Diego and Riverside Counties, Ca. {more about that in 'Swamp Water...'}.
His wife was born and bred in Rhode Island, so Chad now refers to himself as a Bristolian—though the “locals” may dispute that claim. They have three children (from his first wife) and proudly accept their extended family as one. Chad’s first book, Swamp Water, Abalone Shells, Basted Eggs, Sow Belly, and Nettles was written in 1992 and is still available online and at select bookstores.

Pawtucket, RI – In advance of the thirtieth anniversary of its original release in 1992, Bristol, Rhode Island author Chad Bowlin’s critically-acclaimed memoir Swamp Water, Abalone Shells, Basted Eggs, Sow Belly and Nettles has been re-released in hardcover by Stillwater River Publications of Pawtucket.
Set in the dry hills of 1940’s Southern California, Swamp Water… is a collection of childhood reminiscences that discuss grandparents, friends, and the intimate facets of a rural life that have been sadly lost to the passage of time. The tales are at times humorous, at times touching, and at times tragic. But in every case, the book transports the reader back to simpler days with a rich tapestry of stories that celebrates the curiosity of childhood and the unbreakable bonds of family. It is the author’s belief that these special kinds of memories, both fond and never forgotten, can’t help but to shape the person we are destined to become.
“There is still part of a small boy in a man where, if he could, he would return. He would be that Little Man for a short time again, and he would be happy.”
